Sam Bush, The King of Newgrass performs at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek, Colorado on  January 15, 2009

Though he admits a certain discomfort with the moniker “King of Newgrass,” Sam Bush has more than earned it. He was cofounder and leader of the seminal progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival in the 1970s and ‘80s. Bush may not be the only person responsible for newgrass – the wild bluegrass stepchild that features rock ‘n roll grooves and extended virtuosic jams – but since New Grass Revival’s dissolution in 1989, Bush has certainly been one of its most brilliant lights.

Besides helming the ever-popular Sam Bush Band, the mandolin prodigy from Kentucky has been a prodigious influence on musicians young and old. Bands like Nickel Creek, Yonder Mountain String Band and String Cheese Incident are indebted to Bush’s example.

When not heading his own band, Bush has spent the past 15 years as a super-sideman, performing alongside Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett and the Flecktones; spearheading collaborations with Edgar Meyer, Mark O’Connor and David Grisman; and driving nearly every “bluegrass supergroup” imaginable with his inimitable mandolin playing.

His latest record, Laps in Seven, is evidence that he’s still vital on the acoustic music scene.

An Acoustic Evening with Lyle Lovett   January 14, 2009

Sponsored by The Osprey at Beaver Creek, A RockResort

“The Jazzy, honky-tonk songs of singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett have been widening the reach of country music for over 20 years.” - Wall Street Journal

Lyle Lovett is one of the all-time great American singer/songwriters. His voice is unique, but his antecedents are recognizable. In his work two roads come together; ¬the trail blazed by the great Texas storytellers of whom Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark are the best known; and the crooked highway navigated by sophisticated, clever musicians such as Randy Newman and Tom Waits. Lovett’s first gift was to combine these two potent strands of musical DNA into a new genome and generate the brilliant and double-sided “If I Had A Boat,” “God Will,” “If I Were the Man You Wanted,” “Family Reserve” and “Her First Mistake.” He is also capable of both flat-out humor (“That’s Right (You’re Not From Texas”), “Here I am,” ”Church”) and poignant heartbreakers that don’t descend into sentimentality (“She’s Already Made Up Her Mind,” “Nobody Knows Me,” “The Road To Ensenada”).

Lovett’s literary talent has made him part of the tradition of American ironists. This is probably the aspect of Lovett that interested director Robert Altman, who cast him in four films (“The Player,” “Short Cuts,” “Pret-a-Porter,” “Cookie’s Fortune”) and had him score a fifth (“Dr. T and the Women”).

Lovett has been alternating tours with his own band and with songwriter circles, when he performs with John Hiatt, and fellow Texans Guy Clark and Joe Ely. For this special engagement at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, Lovett presents an intimate, acoustic format.

The Wailers Perform    Exodus  January 11, 2009

Graciously underwritten by The Sherrill Family Foundation

Exodus: “The best music album of the 20th century” - Time Magazine

Reggae legends The Wailers, originally made famous as the support band for Bob Marley, bring their time-honored sound to the stage in Beaver Creek for an encore performance. The Exodus Tour features hits from the 1977 album of the same name.

The Exodus Tour pays homage to one of the most respected and enduring records of the 20th century. Exodus was released on June 3, 1977 by Bob Marley & The Wailers and is widely considered one of the best Marley recordings of all time. The audience will hear hits including “Exodus,” “Jammin,” “Three Little Birds,” “One Love/People Get Ready” and “Turn Your Light Down Low.”

Together with Bob Marley, The Wailers have sold in excess of 250 million albums. The Wailers have performed with international acts including Sting, the Fugees, Stevie Wonder and Carlos Santana, as well as reggae legends Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff and Burning Spear. As the greatest living exponents of Jamaica’s reggae tradition, they have played to an estimated 24 million people. They have been the first reggae band to tour new territories, including Africa and the Far East.

The Wailers return to the Vail Valley for their third performance in as many years, after selling out the VPAC in 2008 and performing for a standing-room only Hot Summer Nights crowd at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in 2007.

Performing Arts in Beaver Creek

Three Dog Night performs at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek, Colorado on January 2, 2009

Graciously underwritten by Carolyn & Rollie McGinnis,

Lynn & Brian Ranelle and Anonymous

Now in their fourth decade as a legendary rock band, Three Dog Night has proven that their timeless anthems resound with audiences today as strongly as in the 1970s.

From 1969 – 1974, no other group achieved more Top 10 hits, moved more records or sold more concert tickets than Three Dog Night. The same hits still wind through the fabric of pop culture today. Songs like “Mama Told Me (Not To Come),” “Joy to the World,” “Shambala,” “One” and “Black and White” serve to heighten our emotions and crystallize Three Dog Night’s continuing popularity.

After nearly 40 years on the road, Three Dog Night continues to grow its fan base and develop new ways of doing business. Since 1986, they have performed over 2,000 shows including two Super Bowls. Three Dog Night will record and release a new studio album this year.
